Most importantly – Get Active, Stay Active and (most importantly) Enjoy Exercise!

Balgowan raises over £6,500 for Sports Relief!

KS2 classes headed up to the field in classes and all had a good go at the (another) first-ever ‘Balgowan Army Assault Course’. The course was 150ft long and included 7 different obstacles that the children had to negotiate. We had races, mini-challenges and even the teachers and adults (including Mr Hines!) had a go, all much to the amusement of the children! Everyone managed to complete the entire course and I can tell you (from personal experience!) that the course was particularly tough and physically demanding! Hopefully these events have helped to show children that exercise, while being highly important towards good health, can be really great fun as well! A big thank you needs to go towards the

Golden Gymnasts

Earlier in the academic year, we entered a Year 1 & 2 gymnastics team into the Bromley Schools’ Competition. This team of 5 children did amazingly well and they all absolutely loved representing the school. Before this, Balgowan had never entered a team into any gymnastics competitions and having personally seen some of the talent around in KS2, we decided that it was about time that Balgowan showed off it’s superb gymnasts across the year groups. There was separate competitions for both Year 3 & 4 as well as Year 5 & 6 (both on the same day), split into 3 disciplines: Vault, Body Management and Floor. We decided that extra training to learn routines and perfect different techniques were required.

Mixed Football Madness!

On 16th March a mixed team of year 3/4 girls and boys took part in the Bromley Football Competition held at Kent County Cricket Club, Beckenham. The team were undefeated, drawing three and winning one. Goals from Jake, Max and two from Jasper saw Balgowan win their group. Balgowan and Crystal Palace’s U10 star Hannah, shone, yet again. We are really excited about the sheer talent on show in Year 3 & 4. What a future they have!

Brilliant Balgowan in the Spring Cross Country

More silverware has arrived at Balgowan Primary School courtesy of the 2016 Bromley Primary School Cross Country Race.  On a much calmer day than the November 2015 event, 1,900 runners poured into Crystal Palace Park.  The Year 3 girls ran well – Gabrielle running her first race came 33rd, Amelie 38th and Charlotte 39th.   Charlotte improved 40 places from her first run in November.  Year 3 boys soon followed and were sparked into life by Jed who ran superbly to finish 2nd. Benji 7th, Oliver 8th, Toby 11th and Alex 42nd rounded off a great performance.  However it was down to Alex that the Year 3 boys won the team trophy.  Alex’s trainer fell off near the start of the

Netball Superstars!

Having won the Bromley Schools’ Competition (finishing top of over 40 school teams!), Balgowan earned the chance to represent BROMLEY BOROUGH in the LONDON YOUTH GAMES. This is the biggest annual youth event in ALL OF EUROPE! Each London Borough was represented by their own competition winners and the going was tough indeed. Balgowan won the first of 3 group games, suffering their first ever loss in competitive netball in the second. However, they bounced back to win the final game, ensuring qualification for the top 16 groups. In the final group stages, only the top team from each group qualified for the semi-finals. Balgowan played brilliantly and ended up winning one, drawing one and losing one. This wasn’t quite

Balgowan are CHAMPIONS!! Cross Country Update 2015

On the 14th March 2015 Balgowan Primary School took part in the Bromley Primary Schools Cross Country’s annual event at Crystal Palace Park. It was a freezing cold, but sunny morning at Crystal Palace but the children turned out in their hundreds. After warming up the girls in years 3 and 4 set off at 9:20 for their race. Eleanor Young and Jessica Matthews set the pace, again. Eleanor finished strongest in 48th with Jessica not far behind. Alexia, who keeps getting better and better, also finished well, in 62nd place. Next, the year 3 and 4 boys had their turn. Sam, Theo, Jasper, Matthew, and Jacob performed admirably, again. However, this time it was Arthur who stole the limelight,

PE Update 2015 – Hockey and Netball

Hockey This half term saw the Bromley Primary Schools Hockey Festival take place at Langley Park School. After a huge amount of children training and trialling, we were able to enter three teams (totalling 27 children!) into a very strong tournament consisting of 24 teams. ‘Balgowan Barracudas’ and ‘Balgowan Bulls’ were drawn in the same group – an extremely strong group – and played well throughout. When they played each other, the teams were inseparable, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The ‘Balgowan Bears’ fared better with three wins and two draws. The Bears only conceded one goal in the tournament but failed to qualify to the next round on goal difference (second year running!). Everyone that played did superbly and

Boys Football – CPFC U11’s Tournament

On the 5th February 2015 the U11 boys football team took part in the illustrious CPFC U11’s tournament. The winners would have a chance to play at White Hart Lane (home of Tottenham Hotspur). The event was held on brand new astro-turf at Kent County Cricket, Beckenham. The team played great football throughout their three group games, winning two and losing one. Unfortunately the team needed to win all three games to progress into the final so bowed out early. Goals in the first two games came from Freddie Missin in year 5 and Freddie Fletcher in Year 4. Squad: Sam Langford (GK) Louis Pilger, Freddie Fletcher, Freddie Missin, Joe Barnes-Austin, Tom Penlinton and captain Zac McCullogh.

Bromley Schools Sports Hall Athletics Competition

On Thursday 22nd January 2015, Balgowan took 16 children to compete in the Bromley Sports Hall Athletics Competition at Langley Boys School. The events included: 2×1 relay, 2×2 relay, 4×1 relay, ‘parlauf’relay, obstacle relay, vertical jump, standing long jump, speed bounce and chest push. All our athletes competed in a minimum of two events and did exceptionally well. Balgowan really stood out in two specific events – the speed bounce and parlauf relay. We topped the speed bounce in both the boys and girls competitions; all six children scoring over 50 in 20 seconds – none of the scorers could believe it! Both the boys and girls also dominated the parlauf relay – setting extremely quick times with the middle

Sports news

Sport has been very busy at Balgowan recently, with some fantastic effort and brilliant results.   Tag Rugby On 15th October Balgowan took two teams to a Tag Rugby competition organised by the Old Dunstonians Rugby Club. It was a supremely successful event- the standard of Balgowan’s rugby won many plaudits from watching supporters, with the children’s sportsmanship also of the highest standard. ‘Team Oliver’ won the tournament with three wins and a draw from four games, scoring 27 tries in the process, with ‘Team Headon’ an admirable third after two wins, two defeats and 21 tries scored from their games. Well done to all involved. Boys Football This half-term in P.E there has been plenty to shout about. The

Cross Country

On the 22nd of November 2014 and after weeks of training, Balgowan Primary School took part in the Bromley Primary Schools Cross Country’s annual event at Crystal Palace Park. It was a freezing cold, damp morning at Crystal Palace but the children turned out in their thousands. It was pleasing to see so many children and parents take part in such a special event. After warming up the girls in years 3 and 4 set off at 9:30 for their race. Eleanor Young and Jessica Matthews set the pace early on and continued that until the end. Jessica finished 44th and Eleanor 67th. The surprise was young Ella Matthews in Year 3 who came 63rd, nineteen places behind her older sister. Ella was

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway pays ‘inspirational’ visit to Balgowan Primary School in Beckenham

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway proved a huge success when he paid a visit to a Beckenham school yesterday.   The Eagles’ boss talked to the children of Balgowan Primary School, Beckenham, for around 40 minutes, taking a number of questions at the end.    Mr Holloway was asked to speak to the children by their volunteer football coach, John Wales,  and willingly accepted.   Mr Wales, 45, who lives in Beckenham High Street, recently set up the school’s first football team in ten years, and said: “Ian’s talk went exceptionally well. “He was quite inspirational with the children – he was sincere and had a really good manner.   “He taught some important life lessons – he told the
