Balgowan wins forest school grant – and voting for us in Tesco could add £4,000!

Update: The period of time that voting will be open has now changed, and will open on 31 October and run until 13 November. We have also been told that there will be more participating stores, and will update the list as soon as we have more details.

Balgowan has been nominated to receive valuable funding to create an exciting and interactive forest school as part of the new Tesco/Groundwork – Bags of Help community initiative.

This fantastic £8,000 grant will mean that children at Balgowan will have regular access to outside learning and play, away from the main school site. But we can boost the award to £12,000 by voting for Balgowan in local Tesco stores.

Help boost our grant to £12,000

From 26th September to 9th October 31 October to 13 November we are asking our fantastic community of parents, carers, grandparents and many others to vote for the Balgowan forest school project at selected Tesco stores (see below). Customers will receive a voting token in store with every transaction where they can vote for the Balgowan forest school initiative.

What will we do with the bigger grant?

£8000 will cover all basic setup costs to clear the area, plant some trees and shrubs, a wild meadow area , some log seats , storage and some basic equipment such as den building sets and a mud kitchen .

£10,000 would enable us to buy some waterproof clothing for the children so that they can get really busy in the mud kitchen and a storytelling chair .

£12,000 would enable us to do things such as establish a willow igloo , a set of bat detectors and a fire pit for activities such as making charcoal for outdoor artwork and baking roman bread .

Building a forest school is part of a wider initiative to improve our school field – and other plans include drainage and levelling of the sports playing area.

Where can I vote?

  • Elmers End – Superstore – Croydon Road

  • Sidcup Superstore – Edgington Way

Headteacher at Balgowan, Maria Veysey said: “We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to develop an inspiring and creative outdoor space that will benefit the children, staff and the local community.
