Brilliant Balgowan in the Spring Cross Country
More silverware has arrived at Balgowan Primary School courtesy of the 2016 Bromley Primary School Cross Country Race. On a much calmer day than the November 2015 event, 1,900 runners poured into Crystal Palace Park. The Year 3 girls ran well – Gabrielle running her first race came 33rd, Amelie 38th and Charlotte 39th. Charlotte improved 40 places from her first run in November. Year 3 boys soon followed and were sparked into life by Jed who ran superbly to finish 2nd. Benji 7th, Oliver 8th, Toby 11th and Alex 42nd rounded off a great performance. However it was down to Alex that the Year 3 boys won the team trophy. Alex’s trainer fell off near the start of the race and he decided to pick it up and run 1700 metres with just one trainer. With over 330 runners in the race it was a remarkable achievement. Even though Alex will be disappointed not to have finished in the top 10, he has a bright future as a runner.
The Year 4 girls were next to race. A strong team of girls led by Alexia set off. Seven minutes later, blue bibs appeared around the bend, with Alexia finishing strongly in 3rd place, Hannah C in 9th, Bryony in 10th, Katie in 28th and Isobel in 36th. Overall there were thirteen girls who finished in the top 100. Elsie who came 45th, also finished with one trainer. Well done Elsie! Y4 boys’ race followed. Balgowan has won the team trophy for the last four events – could they be beaten? The answer, simply, was no. Jasper once again thrilled the crowd, finishing in 1st place in a new record time of 6.31. The second quickest time ever at Year 4 level, only 2 seconds out from the overall record set by Finley Lovatt in 2011. Behind Jasper, a fair way behind, a group of boys came running in. Jacob was in the pack and finished in 6th place. Another great run. Matthew finished in 17th, Jude 34th and Luca 38th. Jake and Alex also finished inside the top 100.
In the Year 5/6 girls’ race Jess (6AS) running a personal best, finishing 39th and Jess (5CW) running well yet again, with Leigh (6CW), Eleanor and Sophie (Year 5) running brilliantly and finishing as the top 5 runners for Balgowan. Balgowan girls managed to finish in 9th overall, a big improvement from 11th in Autumn. The Boys’ Year 5/6 race saw the team finish in 2nd place overall, improving on their 3rd place finish in Autumn. The boys finished almost in groups, with Arthur, Max and Ted all finishing in the top 30 and Dylan and Theo finishing just outside the top 50. The Year 5 & 6 teams both improved on their previous positions and worked extremely hard training and a huge well done to them for their commitment and attitude.
FINAL POSITION out of OVER 50 SCHOOLS: 2nd PLACE
