Cross Country

On the 22nd of November 2014 and after weeks of training, Balgowan Primary School took part in the Bromley Primary Schools Cross Country’s annual event at Crystal Palace Park.

It was a freezing cold, damp morning at Crystal Palace but the children turned out in their thousands. It was pleasing to see so many children and parents take part in such a special event.

After warming up the girls in years 3 and 4 set off at 9:30 for their race. Eleanor Young and Jessica Matthews set the pace early on and continued that until the end. Jessica finished 44th and Eleanor 67th. The surprise was young Ella Matthews in Year 3 who came 63rd, nineteen places behind her older sister. Ella was keen to beat her sister, and nearly did. Well done to all the girls who took part. Next spring, we hope to do even better.

Next, the year 3 and 4 boys had their turn. Sam Blowers and Theo Hillier-Taylor were the strong runners in year 4 but it was Jasper Brook, Matthew Smith and Jacob King from year 3 who stole the limelight. Jasper finished an incredible 11th, Jacob 22nd and Matthew 45th. Sam and Theo also finished in the top 50. This meant that we had 148 points which we thought would win the trophy. Unfortunately, Parish pipped Balgowan by four points. Well done to all year 3 and 4 boys who ran so well and were part of Balgowan winning the large school trophy.

The year 5 and 6 girls also ran superbly. Heidi Forsyth (9th), Ella Hooper (11th), Katie Steele (32nd) and Katrine Reoutov (42nd ) finished in the top 50. Mr Slater almost lost his voice cheering on the girls towards the end.

Then came the turn of the 5 and 6 boys who ran with great teamwork. The tactics worked perfectly as Bennie Young shielded Tom Penlington out of the blocks. Tom finished an incredible 3rd, whilst Bennie Young, Sam and Joe Barnes-Austin came in 27th, 28th and 29th. Ted Tayles from year 5 also ran particularly well came inside the top 50 and too – a great achievement a year young!
