Earlier in the academic year, we entered a Year 1 & 2 gymnastics team into the Bromley Schools’ Competition. This team of 5 children did amazingly well and they all absolutely loved representing the school. Before this, Balgowan had never entered a team into any gymnastics competitions and having personally seen some of the talent around in KS2, we decided that it was about time that Balgowan showed off it’s superb gymnasts across the year groups.
There was separate competitions for both Year 3 & 4 as well as Year 5 & 6 (both on the same day), split into 3 disciplines: Vault, Body Management and Floor. We decided that extra training to learn routines and perfect different techniques were required. On Wednesday afternoons, Jan (Gym Jan!) came into school to ‘trial’ and work with children selected to compete. This was the perfect preparation for our 10 competitors and a big ‘Thank You!’ to Jan for giving up her time to help the children out.
None of the 10 children had ever competed before in gymnastics and nerves were natural. However, as soon as they stepped onto the mat, their training really paid off and they fell into their routines without any worries. This was even more impressive from the four boys, Jasper & Lewis (Year 4) and Sam (Year 5) & Riley (Year 6), as none of them attend gymnastics clubs and learned everything from scratch over four weeks!
The Year 3 & 4 team absolutely blew me away with how agile, flexible and, most of all, how precise they were. The three girls, Jaya, Bryony and Isobel set the tone for the whole competition and all received huge applause for their floor routines. The team won the competition by a good distance and it is fair to say that they were incredible!
The Year 5 & 6 team were up against some extremely tough competition and we were paired with a strong Pickhurst team. The Balgowan team performed superbly throughout and were really well supported throughout. They did amazingly well and finished just 3 points overall behind 1st place (Keston), earning Bronze Medals.
Bryony: Gold Medal on Floor (Y3&4)
Isobel: Gold Medal on Body Management (Y3&4)
YEAR 3 & 4: 1st Place
YEAR 5 & 6: 3rd Place
The two individual gold medalists were absolutely amazing and the Year 3 & 4 team now go on to represent BROMLEY at THE LONDON YOUTH GAMES in June!
