Maths Quiz Club Area Heat

On Thursday 15th June, Balgowan entered two Year 6 teams into the ‘National Mathematics Inter-School Quiz Championship: Area Heat.’ Arriving at the competition, we found out that there was 12 teams all competing for 1st place and a guaranteed place in the National Semi-Finals.

The Quizmaster told a few maths ‘jokes’, explained the rules and then we got underway. There was 40 questions in total – each having more or less value depending on the difficulty. Dramatic music was played and 30 seconds was given for each question, really ramping up the pressure. Both teams started well, answering the first 7 or 8 questions without fault. Unfortunately, the boys then lost a few points but stayed within touching distance of the leaders. At the halfway mark, three teams had started to pull away: St. George’s, Russell House and Balgowan (girls). The scores automatically updated after every question, really building up the pressure.

Going into the last 10 questions, Balgowan boys had lost way on the leaders but were still performing well, sitting in 9th. The Balgowan girls were sitting in 2nd place, not far behind Russell House and not far in front of 3rd placed, St. George’s. In the last 10 questions, the Balgowan boys rallied, rolling 100 point answers after 100 point answers. This propelled them up into the top half and that is where they finished after a fantastic final round – 6th Place. The girls were still battling with Russell House and managed to briefly take the lead for a few questions, before Russell House capitalised on a missed question for the girls. The parents were all on the edge of their seats and although they battled all the way to the end, the girls finished just behind Russell House, in 2nd.

The Quizmaster complemented all teams and revealed that this competition was the highest scoring one he had seen this year and that the highest placed non-winners would be invited back to the National Semi-Finals. We have since found out that we were one of these teams and thus, have qualified for the National Semi-Finals!

A huge congratulations to both teams, who were excellent throughout, as well as our fabulous parents – Balgowan easily bringing the most supporters – and finally, all the teachers who have helped develop these children’s maths throughout their school li
