New Afterschool Gardening Club
Due to the recent success of gardening within the Eco Schools programme children will now have the opportunity to attend an after school gardening club.
During sessions children will learn how to use gardening tools correctly. They will also learn how to sow seeds, plant bulbs, take cuttings and how to nurture a wide variety of plants, herbs and vegetables which they will grow themselves. Children will also gain an understanding of how humans can reduce their impact on the environment by learning about composting and by participating in activities to encourage wildlife into the garden.
Children will have the opportunity to be creative, e.g. making bird feeders and designing and making a seed packet. They will also be able to bring home some of their plants and creative goodies!
Research by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2010 found that ‘Gardening in school boosts child development, teaches life skills and makes children healthier and happier’. And it’s great fun too!
Six sessions will now be run on the following dates in the garden area at the front of the school or in RHM classroom and the outdoor area. Each session starts at 3.35pm until 5.00pm
Thursday 27th February, 6th March, 13th March, 20th March, 27th March, 3rd April
Gardening aprons and gloves will be available, but you may wish to provide your child with old trainers/wellies and a waterproof jacket. Drinks will be provided but children can bring a small healthy snack to eat (occasionally they may get to sample the produce they’ve grown).
